“Reading to each other” was a common activity in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, especially among couples. But it’s rare enough today to be worthy of documentation.Had a roommate long ago who regularly did this with her boyfriend. I thought it was really sweet at the time. I was in my 20s.
One summer long ago, I read “The Great Gatsby” to my dad, one chapter per night. He wasn’t too old to read or anything; it’s just something we started doing after having a conversation about how great Fitzgerald’s prose was.
As I recall, my reading was peppered with occasional comments like “What a beautiful sentence!” and “Whoa … that was kind racist.”
