Based on Wisconson recall elections results so far, Democrats have a shot at winning control of the state senate …
Election results are being continually updated here.
Democratic challengers need to win three of the six recall elections against Republican incumbents to win a majority in the senate. So far, the Democrats have already lost two races, and trail badly in a third.
But as of 10 p.m. Central time, the Democrats also hold comfortable leads in two of the three races, and third is virtually tied. If the Democrats can win all three, the Republicans who stripped Wisconsin’s government-employee unions of their collective bargaining rights will have lost their Senate majority in a stunning rebuke from from a clearly pissed-off Wisconsin electorate.
In the end, senate control will probably come down to the result of Hopper/King race in District 18 — which is a real nail-biter. Here are the latest reults:
Precincts Reporting - 83%
Hopper , Randy (i) GOP 23,550 51%
King , Jessica Dem 23,016 49%
Update: With 87% of precincts reporting, King taken over the lead from Hopper by a slim 137-vote margin — she now has 24,458 votes to Hopper’s 24,321.
Update 2: Democrat Jessica King has now officially beaten Republican Randy Hopper, 51-49%. But one other race the democrats were comfortably leading earlier has gotten closer, with only 67% reporting, so it isn’t over yet …
Final update before I go to sleep: That final race that got closer? Well, it looks like the Republicans will win it,and retain control of the senate by a 17-16 margin. But Wisconsin Democrats are now accusing a Republican county clerk of tampering with votes in that district. Gotta love politics!
